Also drilling to something more like 39/64" or 19/32" and using a reamer
to get up to ever-so-slightly smaller than 5/8", since the tolerances on
drilling are pretty sloppy, and likely to make it very difficult to hit
a proper interference fit.

Of course, I say this as a mathematician who merely hangs out with
machinists a bunch in his spare time, and appreciates the attention to
detail that seems to be common to both machining and mathematics.
